Letter from the Chair
The Williton Parish Council, covers the Village of Williton, plus the outlining areas of Egrove, Doniford, Stream, part of Five Bells and the outskirts of Washford.
Parish Councils have limited powers but they are consulted on planning applications which can be as small as an extension to a house to permission for industrial buildings. They are also consulted on issues, such as boundary revisions, shoreline management and major developments such as the proposed new power station at Hinkley Point.
We act as the trustees of the Williton War Memorial Recreation ground, which means we look after the day to day maintenance of the field, employing a groundsman to cut the grass, lay out the pitches and maintain the play equipment.
The Parish Council also leases land at:
- Doniford, which it maintains as a car park for the beach.
- The Copse, near the church, which has recently been planted with trees.
- Bellamy's Corner (Corner of High Street and Bank Street) which it maintains as open space with picnic tables.
As a Parish we monitor many aspects of the life of the village, for example, the police regularly give us updates on crime figures. We also get a printout from the speed monitors which are positioned around the village from time to time.
We try to encourage the community life of the village. In 2009 we were a lead partner in conjunction with the twinning committee, in staging the Christmas Festival and we sponsor the Christmas tree and Christmas lights competition.
We sponsor some street lights in the village and are in the process of investigating the provision of bus shelters. Small grants are also given to village based organisations.
The whole idea of a Parish Council is to be there at the grass roots, helping the community achieve its ideals and ambitions.
